Making It Through Hell…I Mean, Nursing School

The most requested question I get from current nursing students is, “How do you make it in nursing school?”

Nursing school is tough! I will admit I had no idea how tough it was prior to attending school, and I didn’t believe it when my mom, who is also a nurse,  informed me that nursing school was a “pressure cooker.” I was rudely awakened when I received my first syllabus that was thick as a book. I had to learn on my own how to successfully navigate through nursing school, but I was fortunate enough to have met people along the way that gave me helpful tips and tricks. Why Pediatric Nursing?

I’m often asked this question, and I thought I would share it here on the blog.

Prior to my nursing clinical rotation on the pediatric unit, I never considered myself to be a pediatric nurse. I was always afraid of ill children; for, the thought of a sick child was mentally and emotionally encumbering. I complained about the semester before it started, and I sat in class wishing I didn’t have to complete the rotation. One of my professors became aware of my fear of ill children, and she met with me after class to inquire about my fear. I stated, “Its just not for me.” Seeing that I wasn’t able to fully verbalize the reason of my fear, my professor suggested I get over that fear by confronting it.

It represents the union of two people who wish to unite as one and live lawfully together (have to put lawfully in there because you do sign a state appointed marriage license). Even though marriage has its ups and downs, at the end of the day, the two parties should still be in love with each other. Well, that’s how it should be.

Unfortunately, marriage in today’s society receives a bad reputation. Movies and television shows have no respect for marriage, being a single parent is highly accepted and at times celebrated, and let’s not talk about the horrible dating scene. Additionally, studies have shown people are putting off marriage due to a variety of reasons.
